Charlie Maynard resigns from Lib Dem front bench and calls for no confidence vote in Ed Davey

So the gossip about disaffection with the party leadership at Westminster was accurate.

Earlier this afternoon, the Financial Times broke the story that Charlie Maynard, Liberal Democrat MP for Witney. has resigned as the party's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury and asked other Lib Dem MPs to join him in a vote no confidence in Ed Davey's leadership/

The FT website can be hard to access, but Traders Union now has the story too.

While Traders Union concentrates on the party's poll ratings, the FT, I think rightly, sees more significance in our continuing inability to gain press or public attention in a crowded field.

It is some MPs' frustration at this, along with the current leadership's top-down style, that I believe has brought us to where we are today.

  1. While I think Ed’s response on the Triple Lock policy issue is a mistake this is not the time for a pointless exercise in internal introspection and bloodletting just as the Tories seem to be recovering, we won’t be thanked for it.

  2. As someone who joined the Liberal Party way back in the days of Jo Grimond, I'm afraid I don't agree with our anonymous colleague. I've seen many Leaders and (like international footballers) they have a time to come and a time to go.......... For Sir Edward, it's time to say thanks, and to move on before what has become a diminishing Middle England Party going down the plug hole on a bland diet.

  3. By the leaders and MP,s keeping their mouths shut and not rocking the boat we now have Burnham talking about social care and rejoining the EU. etc. Things we have been campaigning on FOR YEARS. Is that what our leaders want, to let Labour take all the credit?:The party does need to shout louder and make a noise.
