W.H. Auden's birthplace in York
The Lib Dem Conference has come and gone. People are turning their central heating back on. Soon the clocks will be going back.
There's nothing for it: I shall have to start showing you the photographs from my summer holiday.
Please sit down. You will find I have taken the precaution of locking the doors.
And where better to begin on National Poetry Day than the birthplace of W.H. Auden? I passed it on the say from York railway station to my hotel. I knew it was going to be a good holiday.
York Stories (one of two excellent website about the city that I discovered while staying there) points out that Auden lived there for only a year after his birth in 1907.
Imagine York (which is the other) has a photograph of the house (54 Bootham) during World War II, when it has a 'S' sign showing passersby that it has an air-raid shelter.
