Leicester Bowstring Bridge latest

I went down to Town Hall Square at lunchtime to photograph the promised "furious protestors" against Leicester City Council's decision to debate the demolition of the Bowstring Bridge in secret. All I found was a desultory group talking to the Leicester Mercury and local radio, so here instead is another view of the bridge.

Keith Perch, the editor of the Mercury, writes a blog. This morning he wrote:

our lawyers have this morning written to Leicester City Council challenging their right to debate the future of the city's Bowstring Bridge in private.

We have asked that they either let our reporter (and the public) into the meeting (which starts at 1pm today) or postpone any discussion of the issue until after they have considered our challenge.

The posting links to a PDF of the letter.

Later. Keith Perch has just posted again on today's events:
In removing us from the chamber they called us irresponsible, erroneous and a rag. Apparently no other newspaper 'in the world' would act the way we do!

  1. I'm not surprised the Labour regime got annoyed - this is the first time in living memory that the Mercury has done some proper dirt-digging and the Labour drones don't like it at all.

To put the Mercury's past record on reporting into context, their former editor Nick Carter now works for the city and county councils as the chairman of our local regeneration quango Prospect Leicestershire.

Congrats to the new Mercury editor for challenging these Machiavellian types.

  2. Ditto. I was pleasantly surprised by Keith Perch's blog and by the useful FoI information that he provides.

  3. You have no argument! You voted them into power, now you will pay the piper. No one can understand how labour walked in, in Braunstone as you cannot get anyone to admit they voted for them.

  4. LEAVE OUR BRIDGE ALONE. YOU HAVE LET IT FALL INTO A TERRIBLE CONDITION. A TERRIBLE CARBUNKLE OF A BUILDING HAS ALREADY BEEN BUILT OVER OUR CANAL NEAR BRUCCIANIS, JUST BEFORE OUR ROMAN BATHS. DESTROY, DESTROY SEEMS TO BE YOUR MANTRA! CAN IT NOT BE USED AS A CYCLE ROUTE OR TOURIST ATRRACTION. COULD THEY ALSO VISIT THE PUMP & TAP PUBLIC HOUSE FOR A DECENT PINT .COULD THE "LANDMARKTRUST" HELP US!!!! S.O.B. ALL OF "OUR"
HISTORY IS HERE IN THIS AREA, ST.MARY DE CASTRO, THE CASTLE, LEICESTER CATHEDRAL & MANY JUST AS IMPORTANT.
