Tankerville lead mine, Shropshire
The remains of the Tankerville mine can be found down a steep track about a mile south of Stiperstones village. They have recently been conserved by the Shropshire Mines Trust. For a few brief years in the 1860s and 1870s this was the most productive lead mine in the country. Read more about its history on the Trust's website.
How fantastic to see Tankerville lead mine in a political blog. I knew it well when studying Industrial Archaeology at Ironbridge Gorge in 1983/84. Nowadays such mines on my doorstep are in the North Pennines where the similar Shildon engine house at Blanchland has been restored. Robert Forsythe
