Steam-hauled freight on the Settle and Carlisle
70039 Sir Christopher Wrenn hauling a freight moves off northbound followed by an 8F Southbound. To the north end of the loops the double headed 'Blackburn Rails' continues the climb to Ais Gill.
Interesting contrast to the Shap one you posted a few days ago.
Then as now the two lines serve very different purposes; Shap sees the faster express freight, while the Settle and Carlisle sees the slower-moving mineral traffic that would have got in the way of the WCML's passenger traffic.
Given the current volume of coal traffic along the S&C, it would have been very short-sighted to have closed it in the 1980s, as so nearly happened.
