Jackson, in The Middle Classes 1900-1950, believes that by the early 1950s the railway system was under such pressure in July and August that, had it not been for the two revolutions of mass car ownership and cheap holidays abroad, the government would have had to compulsorily stagger holidays.

  3. There is an excellent book "Summer Saturdays in the West" pubd by David & Charles which describes the extraordinary level of peak traffic to the West of England in the mid-1950s. Well worth a read even if you're not a rail enthusiast.
