At the Liberal Democrat Conference in September of last year Nick Clegg announced that he would be taking paternity leave when his wife has their next baby. And the child is due this month.
It will be interesting to see if Vince Cable's return as acting leader will lead to a little of his personal stardust rubbing off on the party as a whole.
Reporting Channel 4's political awards, where Vince came away with both Opposition Politician of the Year and the "Political Impact" award, politics.co.uk says:
Lib Dem strategists are perplexed as to why Mr Cable's performance has not resulted in more of a bounce for the party, but opinion polls regularly give him high ratings from the public.
Of course, if the party does rise in the polls while Vince is in charge, that will lead to fresh problems. The press will be full of the suggestion that he should take over permanently.
Still, it's nice to know that the party has "strategists".

Not that I give much credence to the opinion research published in the press, but I see that both the Sun and the Telegraph are indicating an imminent cross-over in the Labour and Liberal Democrat ratings.
While Nick is away, let's go for a govt of national unity with Vince as both PM and Chancellor (after all, the safe is empty, so there is nothing left to take a chance with).
I forgot: there is a door at the back of the safe, leading to a much bigger safe with a printing press in it.
