Government to announce electrification of the Midland Mainline

A report in tomorrow's Guardian says the government is to:
embark on the biggest investment in the rail network since the Victorian era as ministers move to demonstrate their commitment to boosting economic growth.
In an attempt to show a renewed sense of purpose, after last week's bruising rows over Lords reform, the prime minister and his deputy will announce the electrification of a series of lines and the symbolic reversal of some closures imposed in the 1960s by the Beeching axe.
Among the projects listed is the electrification of the Midland Mainline. That is the line that runs from St Pancras to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield.

Most importantly, it is the line that runs through Market Harborough.

The Guardian also says that the reopening to passengers of the line from Bletchley to Oxford will be announced. This is part of the line from Oxford to Cambridge that many want to see restored to full use.

I remember campaigning for the re-opening of the Oxford - Bletchley line as a Young Liberal in Milton Keynes in the 1970s. Glad it's finally likely to happen.
