I greatly enjoyed Paddy Ashdown's autobiography A Fortunate Life, and it is no criticism of the book to say that the middle part dealing with his time as an MP and then Liberal Democrat leader is the least interesting.

This is because the early chapters on his childhood and service in the Marines, and the later chapters on Bosnia, are riveting.
