The new Woodhead tunnel was closed with the rest of the line in 1981. For a year or two before that, Sunday services between Manchester and Sheffield were regularly diverted through it, and I travelled that way more than once.
Whitemoor Yard is now largely occupied by a prison. So much for progress.
Still, enjoy the footage of these and several other post-war modernisation projects.
