Six of the Best 104

The hyperlocal Saddleworth News has been at the centre of the blogging world today for its coverage of the Phil Woolas court case. Meanwhile, BBC journalists have been on strike. So up yours, Andrew Marr.

Also on that case, Norfolk Blogger argues: "Many ordinary Labour voters have found the campaigning from Labour in Oldaham to be distasteful and counter productive. There is a line which many people in politics push against, but few so blatantly step over it (although I feel the Dr Death leaflets distributed in Oxford West and Abingdon - not by Labour - in May 210 against Lib Dem Dr Evan Harris were equally as shameful)."

Sandy Walkington ponders the importance of being Chris Huhne.

David Blunkett's guide dog Sadie is finding it hard to come to terms with life in opposition, reports The Questing Vole.

Elected mayors are the latest gimmick to afflict local government. David MacLean has the latest gossip on who might be the Labour candidate in Leicester.

Talking of Leicester, the Guardian has a guide to the city's best budget restaurants. Of those listed, and others are available, I happily endorse Kayal in Granby Street.

Pushing it a bit to include the Criterion in a list of eateries, but it's a damned fine pub and their pizzas are indeed excellent. Must give the Kayal a go next time I'm in Leicester; I'm there fairly frequently.

Back in the famed Orpington by election, the Liberals put out a leaflet about Peter Goldman's religion. (I have a copy of it if you're interested)

I've also got some examples of the vile, homophobic stuff that the Liberals put out in the Bermondsey by-election too, not that Simon Hughes referred to that during his TV interviews yesterday...

Then there was the local council by election in this area a few years ago where the Labour candidates marital status (divorced) became an issue that the Lib Dems thought it fit to mention...

Then there were the knowing lies told about a Tory Councillor and his alleged support for a local school closure in another Lib Dem leaflet...

And the other Lib Dem one that repeatedly listed the Labour candidates name because 'Abdul Sadiq Rahman' presumably needed publicising more than, say, John Steven Jones'...

I'm not saying Woolas was right in what he did (though I don't think the courts should decide whether he can stand again) just don't try and paint yourselves whiter than white and come over all pious and offended about this when you've been responsible for some of the nastiest campagining tactics imaginable yourselves.
