Chess in Schools and Communities

In recent days the Liberal Democrat MEPs Bill Newton Dunn and Graham Watson have both written about meeting the former world champion Garry Kasparov, who is campaigning to get chess included in school curricula across Europe.

I don't know about that, but I am a great believer in chess clubs schools, as readers of my recent Guardian article will recall.

If you want some practical help in setting one up yourself, the people to contact are Chess in Schools and Communities. I wrote about them in that article and they have kindly put a link to it on their website.

We have been creating some programs here in Australia for chess which closely trains kids to become great players in the future. The main objective is to help kids excel all the more in school with the help of chess. We believe that with chess, kids' thinking skills and ability to solve problems will be enhanced. I am personally impressed with the campaign done by the former chess champion Garry Kasparov in recommending chess to be included in the school curriculum. What a blessing it would be to be able to work with him one day.
