Brenda Holloway: Every Little Bit Hurts

The great British bands of the 1960s generally began their careers by doing faithful cover versions of Black American singers. Every Little Bit Hurts was recorded by both the Spencer Davis Group and the Small Faces - from which we can conclude that Steve Winwood was a more convincing soul singer than Steve Marriott.

And if you listen to this version of the song by The Jam you will conclude that both are better than Paul Weller.

Anyway, this is the original Motown recording of the song that all three are copying - particularly the wonderful piano part. Brenda Holloway is not the best known of that label's artists, but she sounds pretty damned good here.
