Clun Castle and bowling green

"There is no other place in England quite like Clun," said Malcolm Saville in his foreword to The Secret of Grey Walls.

This picture shows the little town's bowling green which you will find among the ruins of its castle.

Those ruins have been hung with scaffolding for a couple of years now - I saw it going up in the summer of 2008. Local rumour has it that the money for restoration has run out, but English Heritage denies this.

I'm finding this so interesting as I've known the name Clun for years from Malcolm Saville's books (and the endpaper maps!) but have never been there. Thanks for posting.
