How West Hampstead was won by the Liberal Democrats

Lewis Baston has posted an in-depth report on the Liberal Democrat victory in Thursday's by-election in West Hampstead:

Liberal Democrat leaflets targeted left-liberal voters who had supported Labour in the 2024 general election and subsequently felt disappointed. They criticised the Starmer government over welfare cuts, Europe and potential cuts to central government funding of London boroughs. Gaza came up frequently on the doorstep.
Labour’s campaign majored on the record of Camden Council, one of London’s more effective and popular borough administrations, although it is rare even in those circumstances for people to feel all that grateful for improved schools and libraries.

The by-election was caused by the entertaining resignation of a Conservative councillor who was originally elected under the Labour flag.

  1. I used to enjoy reading accounts of successful election campaigns, but they don't seem to be produced so often nowadays. Peter Bartram did a small booklet on gaining control of Adur Council, and I remember Chris Davies wrote one about Old Swan Ward in Liverpool.

    1. Years ago, my manager arranged a day's training for us on writing media pitches. When the trainer turned up, it was Peter Bartram.
