The other day I wrote about the East Coast floods of 1953. A better parallel with our recent difficulties are the floods in the Fens that took place a few years before that. This website will tell you all about them.
Incidentally, both these disasters formed the background to books by my favourite writer when I was a child. The 1947 Fens floods inspired The Luck of Sallowby and the 1953 floods Sea Witch Comes Home.
Later. Another posting gives an extract from The Luck of Sallowby.

We're seeing reactionary politics gain a lot of ground in the U.S. Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions regarding corporate financing of elections and a new law that makes it illegal for U.S. attorneys to represent and provide consultation to individuals who may belong to so-called "Terrorist" groups, are two examples. My theory is that reactionary law-making is caused directly by the loss of strength and influence of the United States' as a world financial power. I'm unfamiliar with UK history, but wondered if you could recognize the same reactionary political history after the UK lost governance of India? I'm just guessing about this. Hope you have more real info. Thank you, Nan Kane
