Leighton Andrews at the BBC

On Friday I blogged about the way that John Birt was employed on a freelance contract while Director General of the BBC to allow him to avoid tax.

A reader has sent me this Private Eye cutting from that era. It dates from 23 August 1996 and features Leighton Andrews, former Liberal parliamentary candidate and Gillingham Town supporter and current Welsh education minister and Cardiff City fan.

I don't know if there were any tax implications to this move, and there is certainly no suggestion that Andrews acted improperly, but it is interesting to be reminded of how the BBC operated then. I wonder if it is so different today?
