Old engine house chimney, Bedford Road, Northampton

As you speed out of Northampton on the Bedford Road, you may notice this ornate but friendly chimney on your right.

My current favourite book - A Guide to the Industrial Heritage of Northamptonshire - reveals that it is all that remains of an engine house built to accommodate a 12-horsepower steam engine in 1863. This toiled to improve the town's sewage disposal system until a new works opened at Billing in 1875.
