So Abu Qatada is back in Jordan, to widespread rejoicing in Britain. But one thing puzzles me...
For years we have been told that Abu Qatada is "a fanatic who, everyone seems to agree, is hell bent on destroying our way of life".
Yet at no point in his nearly 20 years in Britain did he do anything that meant he could be charged and convicted of a crime in a British court.
How was this possible?

I think he was only "hell bent on destroying our way of life" in private conversations that the security services bugged.
