Poynton shared-space traffic scheme
This video makes an impressive case for shared-space schemes, which reverse decades of transport engineering by forcing cars and pedestrians to mix.
Taking back the streets from dominance by the motor car would be a good idea on all sorts of grounds, from health to community building.

This is an excellent example of how a bit of applied thinking can make substantial improvements in people's experience of the streets. Would have been nice to learn a bit more of how they won over the local council. I suspect that would be the main sticking point in most places.
